We have recently transitioned from Summer into Fall and that means the return of the major shows (as well as the farewell to summer shows). Let’s start off with some recent season finales from our summer shows before we get into shows you should be checking on this fall.
I personally enjoy the entire Power franchise. The characters and the usage of New York City (along with parts of Queens and Brooklyn) make this an authentic telling of NYC life for hustlers and potential moguls. The season finale however left me disappointed. When for the most part figure 80% of what happens in the show is going to happen, you are going to feel the writing is weak. I do feel now that Kanaan will be the main villain in season 4 with Tommy being the anti-hero we will be back to a season 2 flow.
This is my favorite summer show. I mean my twitter name is Cam Calloway and my best friend named his Reggie Vaughn. The transformation from season 1 to season 3 is astounding and the severity of the topics discussed is important for the black community to experience. I feel this show has the highest ceiling when it comes to potential and will continue to progress with LeBron James as its strongest backer (he is one of the executive producers).
I have to say that Ballers is a show that centers around Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The latter half of season 2 positions itself to build the stories of the other characters. While the action is lacking, I do foresee the third season being a strong transition into stronger material. My only complaint was how dry the scenes were when The Rock was not in the show. I do feel the other characters are stepping their game up along with their stories becoming full of substance. The third season is crucial to this show manifesting a proper identity for the show’s path in the future. I have full confidence it will get there.
If you don’t understand my love affair with Atlanta, read my earlier article to see more. I do believe the momentum this show has had (already confirmed for a second season) is phenomenal to the addition of more shows of color on major networks. I believe in Donald Glover’s vision and feel he has a surefire hit on his hand. That boy good.
I have heard so many great things (still haven’t seen it due to it not being on Netflix or Hulu) but the fact remains this is a show you should have on your watchlist if you have OWN network.
How To Get Away With Murder
This show has been over the top with the drama scenes and plot twists for a while now. Viola Davis is one of the best actress on television right now *mic drop*. I feel this show goes as far as Viola can take it. If you haven’t been watching this I will have you know this my third favorite show (after Atlanta and Black-Ish).
I watched this show over the weekend and I feel this could be a sleeper pick similar to Survivor’s Remorse last year. Our main character whose nickname is Pitch gets a called up from the minor leagues to be a spot starter for the Padres. I believe we need more shows displaying the inner strength black women exude. I enjoy the potential this show has and I hope people tune into this show to give it a chance. It has a great cast and is trying to show the ability for women to compete on the same platform as men (and do well). Even though baseball is involved it isn’t is a secondary element to the show dynamic.
Issa Rae is a very necessary component for the new wave of shows featuring black women in a light that is outside the typical hollywood norm. I enjoyed the first episode and I feel this is a show that can connect quite well with 16-25 year range for black women. I feel the fall is in great hands with all of these great shows.
