On April 1st, 2016, the future stars of WWE took over Dallas, Texas with their special live series, NXT Takeover. The event showcased new champions crowned, debuts of some of the best talent in the world, proper farewells and a fight for the right to be called NXT Champion. Win or lose, the stars of NXT made an impact and proved that NXT Takeover: Dallas was the best if not most exciting event of WrestleMania weekend. Here are the results and some of the highlights of the event.
American Alpha def. The Revival (c)
NXT Tag Team Championship Match
Chad Gable & Jason Jordan had the crowd in the palm of their hands when their music hit to start Takeover: Dallas, taking on Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson aka The Revival for the NXT Tag Team Championships.
With fantastic Tag Team chemistry and charisma from both teams, this was easily a good pick for the opening match of the night. With The Revival stalling the match at the beginning courtesy of Scott Dawson getting into the head of Chad Gable. But that wasn’t enough for the athleticism of American Alpha. Being the great heels they are, The Revival tried every trick in the book to steal the win from Gable & Jordan, but with solid teamwork and determined to win, both men managed to hit the Grand Amplitude on The Revival to score the win and become the new NXT Tag Team Champions.
Emotional and lost for words, Gable & Jordan celebrated their well deserved win over The Revival in and out the ring with huge chants and cheers of the WWE Universe, making their mark on not just the Tag Team Division but the entire WWE roster.
Austin Aries def. Baron Corbin
Singles Match
The Greatest Man That Ever Lived Austin Aries took on The Lone Wolf Baron Corbin in his WWE/NXT debut match. Going against huge odds, Aries gave Corbin a run for his money by using his in ring ability to keep Corbin on his toes throughout the match. In and out the ring, both men gave it their all until Austin Aries came up with the win over Corbin with a reversal of The End of Days into a roll up pin shocking The Lone Wolf. This match showed us Baron Corbin is on a great match streak and Austin Aries is only just beginning to show NXT what he can do.
Shinsuke Nakamura def. Sami Zayn
Singles Match
A likely candidate for match of the year, international superstar and veteran Shinsuke Nakamura made his WWE/NXT debut by taking on the Godfather of NXT, Sami Zayn. Both men gave it their all after an amazing exchange of charisma and in ring ability. After a great back and forth, Nakamura struck Zayn with a knew blow from the second-rope and gave him his finishing move the Kinshasa to score the win over Zayn. With Sami Zayn on the main roster and WrestleMania bound in a 6-Way ladder match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, this match was not only Match of The Year material, but a very proper farewell for the superstar in NXT.
Asuka def. Bayley (c)
NXT Women’s Championship
With the rise of the Women’s Division changing the landscape of the WWE, Bayley & Asuka had little issue proving that the women of NXT can compete in matches and steal the show. With the NXT Women’s Championship on the line, both women gave it their all with submission moves, reversals and spirit with Asuka gaining the upper hand on Bayley, making her pass out to vicious armbar and capture the Women’s Championship. Despite the loss, Bayley showed charisma by not giving up and tapping out and also a gave us a tease of Bayley’s potential main roster debut in the near future. Asuka came, she took over Dallas, Texas and looks very ready to take over NXT as the new Women’s Champion.
(c) Finn Balor vs. Samoa Joe
NXT Championship Match
The final match of the card had The Demon, Finn Balor defending his title against the violent Samoa Joe in a brutal fight filled with the blood, sweat and tears both superstars were leaving all over the arena.
Joe came down the ramp ready to fight and take the NXT title from Balor only for The Demon to arrive ready to battle, with a chainsaw. Always making an great entrance, Finn came into the ring only to give Joe the fight he wanted him with fierce attacks and high flying moves all over the ring to even busting Joe open. Even with several stops to help cut from Balor from heavy bleeding, Samoa Joe kept up the offense to gain control over The Demon with heavy hits and tight submissions. Eventually Balor got the best of Joe with a Coup de Grace and roll up pin to beat Samoa Joe and retain the NXT Championship.
This shocking win gives more fuel to the fire of Finn Balor being called up soon to the main roster to take lead of the future Balor Club with members Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows. Samoa Joe could even be in the talks for a main roster debut. Overall NXT Takeover: Dallas was a fantastic show of WrestleMania proportions that showed and proved the stars of NXT are proving they’re the best of the best and ready to take over.
